The Forest Sanctuary is a Forest and Bird Project. Walk among giant trees and rare native wildlife in a stunning ancient forest - entry is free!

VOLUNTEERS CONTINUE TO CARE FOR THE SANCTUARY AND PROVIDE THE PASSION, DEDICATION AND PEOPLE POWER TO KEEP THIS COMMUNITY-LED CONSERVATION PROJECT MOVING FORWARD. THEIR EFFORTS ARE CONTRIBUTING TO REBUILDING BIRD POPULATIONS.

The reserve's hero is 'Ratanui', a rata tree which is estimated to be somewhere between 500 and 1000 years old. With a girth of more than 11 metres and standing 43 metres high, Ratanui is believed to be the largest rata tree in New Zealand.
